This was my first children’s theatre production as a visiting assistant professor of lighting and sound at IUSB. In this production, we used EL wire to display text on spider map.

This sound design explored how to create immersive spatial audio using a minimal setup. With only four speakers and QLab’s Audio Map, the system treated the entire theatre as a playable space rather than just a stage-focused sound source.
Instead of relying on complex equipment, the design focused on positioning and movement. Sounds were placed and moved across a virtual map, allowing effects like the spiders to travel through the audience and environmental sounds to build depth and direction.
This approach made the world of the play feel more alive and interactive, especially for young audiences, while also making the design process faster and more flexible. It shows that effective spatial sound comes from thoughtful design and calibration, not just advanced technology.
